In 1987 when this film was released I was 4 years old, which probably makes me about 7 or 8 when I first saw this - my first 18 rated movie - when my older brother (then 13) managed to get a copy of the film on VHS and forgot his older brother responsibilities, allowing me to watch it with him. Show Reviewsįor me this film was the daddy, and it still holds up incredibly well today.

Recommended?: if you don't mind the new-age of dumb sci-fi/action horror rather than the classics that didn't treat us all like idiots. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite deliver.īetter than I remember but where's the rationality? The actual tense horror? The sheer quality of the originals? Instead of eggs we get vases? Instead of facehuggers we get pasty looking cobras? This wouldn't have mattered if the rest of the movie was up to scratch in terms of tension, interesting characters and a good narrative. Prometheus seems to want to distance itself from the original Alien franchise but in doing so only gives the viewer lesser equivalents of what we know and love. In fact, AVP has the upper hand in that it actually features everyone's favourite sci-fi/horror elements (the eggs, facehuggers, the Xenomorphs and the Alien Queen) Unfortunately, considering how much Ridley despised AVP he seems to have a done a pretty good job of replicating the plot and the majority of the one dimensional characters that featured within it. However, the movie does look visually stunning and for the first hour at least it manages to engage. What a frustrating movie to try and rate and review! Nowhere near as good as it could/should have been and probably one of the biggest let downs since Matrix Reloaded for me. This review reportedly contains spoilers.
